Microsoft invites you to go Socl
Another social network joins the bustling party
Microsoft has opened up its own social network, Socl, for public viewing, following a year of private beta testing.
If you have a Facebook account, you can take a look at Socl for yourself and share content in the service’s online gallery. Microsoft has said that it isn’t trying to compete with Facebook here, or indeed with any other social network either.
So what, exactly, is the point? The site itself reads “Socl is a research project from Microsoft Research FUSE Labs and began as an experiment in social search targeted at students for the purpose of learning”.
It’s an image-rich experience with users creating collages based on their interests and our first impressions of it are that this is an interesting diversion from your typical social interaction online. How successful an experiment it will be remains to be seen.
